About the Project

For this project, the client wanted to combine traditional and contemporary styles in a visual interesting way. They also wanted a bold color for the island. What they didn’t know…was how to accomplish all of that.

After discussing things with the client, we settled on combining a traditional Shaker-style door with a more contemporary-looking thin rail and stile. We went through a variety of color options for the island and eventually settled on Naval by Sherwin Williams—accented with Light French Gray by Sherwin Williams.

The client didn’t want a gap between the top of their kitchen cabinets and the ceiling, but their funds were limited, so we played around with several different options for filling in that gap. Eventually, though, they finally decided that it would be worth the extra money to get look they wanted, so we added in a second row of upper cabinets.

In the master bathroom, we combined grain-match Rift Walnut with Monocoat Natural by Rubios to evoke a traditional-contemporary feel. We echoed the same look and feel with the mudroom built-ins and a custom wood hood for the kitchen stove.

All together, we were able to balance the client’s stylistic and financial goals to create a beautiful look the client loved. It took some careful thought and research, but the end result was well worth the effort.
